2011 JGA Scholarship Recipients named
Four outstanding young people have been named the 2011 winners of the Junior Golf Association scholarships. Two of the winners are from Portage Northern High School with one from Comstock and the other from Vicksburg. The four winners were selected from 12 applicants that comprised one of the strongest fields ever.
Winner of the Heidi Krum Scholarship is Laura Glass while Ryan Werme earned the Jim Roschek Scholarship.
The late Heidi Krum was a longtime golf professional in the area and was the first director of the Junior Golf Association of Southwest Michigan.
Roschek was director of golf overseeing play at Milham Park, Eastern Hills and Red Arrow golf courses, all owned by the city of Kalamazoo. He now serves as director of golf for the 7 courses owned by the city of San Antonio, TX.
Winners of the John Block Scholarships, named for the longtime Kalamazoo Gazette golf writer John Block, are Kelsey Wiers and Scott Manski.
Glass and Werme and graduates of Portage Northern High School, while Wiers matriculated from Comstock and Manski from Vicksburg. Wiers, Glass and Werme all ranked first in their graduating classes and Manski was fifth in his. Wiers and Werme plan to continue their educations at University of Michigan while Glass is headed for Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN, and Manski will attend Kalamazoo College.
The latest selections brings to 49 the number of JGA Scholarship winners with the awards totaling $67,000.
These awards from the Junior Golf Fund, a component fund of the Kalamazoo Community Foundation, are given annually to graduating seniors who have participated in the Junior Golf Association program and who exemplify superior character, sportsmanship, and good citizenship on the golf course and in their daily lives.
